• Immunogen: Gradient purified, disrupted native adenovirus type 5 virions
• Localization: Major coat protein of adenoviruses.
• Specificity: Recognizes numerous Adeno proteins including hexon protein, and reacts with Adenovirus types 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 7a, 8, 31, 40 & 41. Broad reactivity with other Adenovirus types is expected. Goat anti Adenovirus antibody does not cross-react with Parainfluenza types 1-3, Influenza A & B, RSV, hMPV and Rhinovirus type 16. Goat anti Adenovirus antibody does not react with uninfected Hep-2, LLCMK2 and Vero cells. Adenoviruses are 80-110 nm diameter, non-enveloped icosahedral viruses that can cause respiratory illness, infantile gastroenteritis and other mild disorders such as conjunctivitis. Features of Adenovirus have made it a useful tool for gene transfection and expression in mammalian cells.

Background

Hexon protein is a major coat protein of adenoviruses. Adenoviruses capsids have three principal protein components: the hexon, the penton, and the fiber. Hexon consists of three subunits together forming two major components of different morphological symmetry. A triangular top with three towers of density is superimposed on a more bulky pseudo hexagonal base. The symmetry of the top is in accord with the trimeric nature of hexon, but that of the base derives from the molecular function, which is to provide a densely packed impenetrable protective outer layer for the virion.
