Background

Batroxobin is serin protease secreted by the sneak venom gland. It can release fibrinopeptide A by cleaving between 16 Arg-17 Gly in the A (alpha)-chain of fibrinogen, and leading to the clot formation through aggregation of formed of fibrin I monomer or Des-AA-monomer. But the specificity of further degradation of fibrinogen varies with species origin of the enzyme. In contrast to thrombin, it does not affect the functions of platelets. Hence, BX is used for the investigation of the last phase of blood coagulation. Due to its heparin insensitivity it can detect fibrinogen polymerization disorders even in the presence of heparin. Additionally, it is available under the name Defibrase (Pentapharm) for the treatment of thrombotic diseases.
