Background

Capsid protein p24 forms the conical core of the virus that encapsulates the genomic RNA-nucleocapsid complex. Structural studies demonstrated two distinct domains (N and C-terminal domains) that have different roles in the virus morphogenesis (1). Additionally, the level of p24 found in the blood serum is used as an indicator of HIV progression (2).
