Background

BAFF, also known as BLyS and TALL-1, is a 32 kDa TNF family transmembrane protein that plays a critical role in the development and survival of B lineage cells. BAFF also costimulates T cell activation, promotes a Th1 biased immune response, and promotes the expansion of Treg cells. It additionally promotes monocyte survival, proinflammatory cytokine secretion, and differentiation to macrophages. It can be expressed as a homotrimer or as a heteromer in association with APRIL. BAFF is produced by monocytes, macrophages, neutrophils, dendritic cells, T cells, adipocytes. BAFF signals through the receptors BCMA, TACI, and BAFF R which are primarily expressed by B cells.
