Background

IL-37, which is also known as IL-1F7, belongs to the Interleukin 1 cytokine family. It is reported to bind Interleukin 18 binding protein (IL18BP) which inhibits the IL18 protein functions. Functionally IL-37 forms a complex with IL-18 receptor beta subunit and thus inhibits the activity of IL-18. It is also reported that IL-37 acts as fundamental inhibitor of innate immunity. Experimental studies show that expression of IL-37 in macrophages or epithelial cells almost completely suppressed production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, whereas the abundance of these cytokines increased with silencing of endogenous IL-37 in human blood cells.
