Background
CLEC8A, also called LOX-1 or OLR1, is one of the original C-Lectin type receptors (CLRs) associated with the fungal pattern recognition receptor Dectin-1. The DECTIN-1 associated clusters, including LOX-1, are found in the mammalian natural killer gene complex (NkC) (1). LOX-1 is an innate immune receptor expressed on a variety of cells including activated macrophages, platelets, smooth muscle endothelium and fibroblasts. Expression of LOX-1 is increased by pro-inflammatory milieus in autoimmune pathologies like diabetes or atherosclerosis or hyperlipidemia caused also by oxidative stress or oxLDL (2, 3). As activating immunoreceptors, CLRs are type II transmembrane proteins with a single CTLD, a C-type lectin-like domain that recognizes proteins and not carbohydrates (4). Antibody to LOX-1 is useful for functional, phenotyping or structural studies.
